0-bit for Brie
October 20, 2006
The laptop Brie, formally known as lcni.uoregon.edu\brie, died due to progressive hard disk failure.
Brie was owned by the Robert and Beverly Center for Neuroimaging (LCNI). Assembled in early 2002 in Malaysia, Brie was a Dell
Latitude 810 with a Pentium III 850MHz processor, 500 MB RAM, 28 GB
hard disk, and a 17" UXGA (1650x1200) monitor. Brie ran the MS Windows
2000 OS throughout its life. All of its hardware was original.
Among many daily tasks, Brie was crucial for development of software including Space Software, SS_Edges,
and a variety of fMRI utilities. A "road warrior", it traveled daily in
Eugene but also enjoyed mountain, desert and beach environments.
After suffering a fall from a couch in 2005, Brie
could not support its screen except in a nearly vertical position. But
neither this hinge failure nor its broken battery latch and balky
delete key slowed its operation or caused it any other troubles.
Brie is survived by its underutilized twin,
lcni.uoregon.edu/jarlsberg (the LCNI conference room laptop), several
workstations with a variety of cheese names, its primary user Mark, and system administrator Chuck.
Memorial services will be private. No memory chips please.
